Famouse Austrian-Jewish journalist and novelist, best known for hisfamily saga Radetzky March (1932) and for his novel of Jewish life, Job (1930). He wrote in German. Most of his works are filmed. He was born in Brody, Lviv region. From 1913 Roth began to study philosophy and German literature at Lviv University and then at the Universityof Vienna. However, in 1916, Roth quit his university course and volunteered to serve in the Imperial Habsburg army. In honour of the writer there is a memoriable plaque with inscription in Ukrainian and German in Brody as well as in Lviv on Chehova Str., where he stayed with his uncle.
